A message from the author
"For Love of Country presents a side of the story that had gone virtually untold until now. Survivors of abuse by military personnel have spoken out loud and clear about their experiences within the military. Women and men who want to serve our country should be able to do so without threat or fear of sexual assault or harassment by their fellow service members.
"For Love of Country" honors those who have served with integrity and with pride as well as the strong leaders who have supported service members after reporting a sexual trauma. This book tells their side of the story. This book is dedicated to those service members in hope it will make a difference in the future."
--Terri Spahr Nelson, MSSW, ACSW US Army ('79-'83)
The findings from a five-year, international study on sexual victimization in the US Armed Forces are documented in a new book, For Love of Country: Confronting Rape and Sexual Harassment in the U.S. Military written by Terri Spahr Nelson and published by the Haworth Press.
The book is based on the perspectives of women and men who experienced rape or sexual harassment while on active duty. Included throughout the text are quotes and excerpts from veterans, active duty service members, military leaders, congressional representatives, Pentagon reports, and other research in the field. The end result is one of the most thorough assessments of the problem to date to highlight victims' experiences.
"...Each and every service member should be valued. They need to know that if someone harasses or violates them or a fellow service member, the military will be there to support them...The women and men in the US Armed Forces deserve better for all that they do and sacrifice in service to our country..." --For Love of Country
“I was prepared to be a POW (prisoner of war) or worse for my country. I wasn't prepared to have my superiors and comrades sexually abuse me. I must admit that a chaplain I told my story to in 1996 said something I had not realized. He said, “Your comrades were your enemy and you were in a combat zone.” I thought that was rather interesting. I was only 19. I just wanted to carry on the tradition of our family being in the military.”
--19 year old, raped upon entering the service
“To take one incident, one trauma, and record it as part of your life. And who could you tell? I went up the line (even the MP’s discouraged pressing charges). We were the ones made to feel guilty. We never talked about what was going on. It was an unspoken truth most of us tried to deny. Now that the story is being told and we've already paid. How can you make this wrong right?"
--A female veteran and victim of rape and sexual harassment
"Dedicated and honorable service members and military leaders have worked hard to uphold the laws, values and espirt de corps that are integral to the military. They understand that rape and sexual harassment in the US Armed Forces are not consistent with the military values of honor, integrity, and duty to service and country. Among the men and women who sacrifice so much to serve their country, there should be no tolerance of such abuse...It is time to confront rape and sexual harassment in the military if for no other reason than because it is the right thing to do."

Book Reviews
"TERRI SPAHR NELSON HAS DONE THE SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE--written a primer to the issue of military sexual abuse. . . . She brings an important message--that the absence of current media attention doesn't mean the problem has gone away; that only decisive action by military leadership at all levels can break the cycle of repeated traumatization; and that the failure to do so is, as Nelson calls it, a 'power failure'--a refusal to exert positive leadership to stop violent individuals from using the worst power imaginable."
--Chris Lombardi, Women's E-News , New York“RINGS VERY TRUE. . . . Nelson has done an admirable job describing the experiences that women serving their country experience by way of rape and sexual harassment, and what response most of them get.” --J. Zorza, Sexual Assault Report
T. S. Nelson's detailed account of rape and sexual harassment in the American armed forces is a welcome addition to the literature on sexual violence. --Miranda Allison, School of Politics, Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. (For the complete published journal review, refer to: H-Minerva, Quarterly Report on Women and the Military. December, 2002.)
"This is an indispensable reference for military service members, for professionals working with victims of military abuse, and for those who are seeking to stop victimization." --Janice E. Rench, National Consultant and Author
"This book was extremely validating for me. It is a relief that women (and men) are finally able to talk about the horrible assaults they suffered while serving their country and that someone is listening and writing it down. This is an important book on a serious subject that has been long neglected. It is imperative that military leadership take notice. Fascinating and informative." --Amazon.com reviewer from Baker City OR
The New Training Manual for Officers--"I would recommend this book as standard training for all officer candidates. This book is so well written and true that it would behoove us to dissolve all current sexual harassment/abuse training and instead assign this book to each Commander.... The standard needs to be raised. Ms. Nelson, with candor and grace, says how high. --H. Adam, US Air Force Veteran
