The findings from a five-year, international study on sexual victimization in the US Armed Forces are documented in this book written by Terri Spahr Nelson and published by the Haworth Press, Inc.
The book is based on the perspectives of women and men who experienced rape or sexual harassment while on active duty. Included throughout the text are quotes and excerpts from veterans, active duty service members, military leaders, congressional representatives, Pentagon reports and research in the field. The end result is one of the first and most thorough assessments of the problem to date to highlight victims' experiences with sexual harassment and rape in the US Military. It concludes with specific recommendations for change based on the research findings and victims' input. Likely to be OF GREAT VALUE to survivors of rape or harassment in the military...demonstrates that victims, who may never have told anyone their experiences, are not alone.
The book should also be used by government and military agencies in formulating policy on rape and sexual harassment in the military.
A sensitive and sometimes moving approach to the subject matter, with a good mix of personal accounts and supporting official documents and statistics.”
--H Net
"Excellent reading and well researched. This book was extremely validating for me. It is a relief that women (and men) are finally able to talk about the horrible assaults they suffered while serving their country and that someone is listening and writing it down.
This is an important book on a serious subject that has been long neglected. It is imperative that military leadership take notice. Fascinating and informative." --From a reader in Oregon as posted on Amazon.com.
